Benefits Clerk

Summary: 
Answers employees' questions and records employee enrollment in benefit programs by performing the following duties.
Essential Functions: 
  • Distributes information on and explains benefits programs such as 401K, medical, dental, life, and disability plans to employees and dependents.
  • Conducts monthly group benefit orientation for eligible new hires.
  • Conducts weekly 401(k) orientation for rehires.
  • Runs termination report weekly.
  • Maintains COBRA and sends packets to eligible employees.
  • Enters termination dates for benefits in AS400, BlueCross BlueShield, VSP and other vendor websites.
  • Answers employee benefit questions.
  • Consults with BCBS/VSP customer service to resolve claim problems.
  • Assists with annual Open Enrollment.
  • Reconciles vendor invoices and makes adjustments as needed.
  • Files Short Term/Long Term Disability claims for employees and communicates with designated claims specialist as needed.
  • Maintains waiver of premiums for Short Term/Long Term Disability using the AS400.
  • Files death claims for employees/dependents as necessary.
  • Maintains medical support orders.
  • Ensures timely payments of monthly premiums.
  • Receives insurance premiums from employees and enters on spreadsheet for weekly deposit.
  • Maintains employee benefit files.
  • Maintains petty cash box.
  • Fills in for switchboard when needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by management. 
Education and/or Experience: 
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Previous Human Resources or Benefits experience preferred. Ability to operate multiple pieces of office equipment including copier, fax machine, etc.
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS - Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS - Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • REASONING ABILITY - Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.
  • COMPUTER SKILLS - Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook) with AS400 experience preferred.
Licenses/Certificates: 
Current driver's license required.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and talk or hear.  The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.  The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet.
